We’ve always got time to talk about indie titles that were inspired by or reminiscent of classic video games. This is especially true when the title in question incorporates unique gameplay elements – like the ability to (time) travel between two eras of gaming.

Sabotage Studio recently announced The Messenger, a new action platformer involving a time traveling ninja. Tasked with carrying a powerful scroll through a cursed world, the protagonist will wage war with a demon army. In order to slay his powerful enemies, he’ll need to jump through time, going from an 8-bit platformer to a 16-bit one.

Not only does The Messenger’s visuals change to reflect the passage of time, but the gameplay mechanics evolve as you go. Adding to this is the ability to carry upgrades from one completed playthrough to the next, which can be used to explore hidden levels and unlock new story arcs. Basically, there’s more to The Messenger than meets the eye.

Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger will be available later this year for PC and consoles. Be sure to check back here as we continue to follow this title!
