Microsoft Reveals The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition

Microsoft made good on the recent “digital console” rumors in announcing the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. Coming bundled with three titles – Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3 and Sea of Thieves – and a lower price point, fans looking to upgrade to an S should take note.

Digital distribution is the way of the future. And while some of us prefer getting physical media whenever possible (yours truly included), this isn’t a bad move for the gamers who’ve accepted the coming wave. The price is a sticking point though. Coming in at $249.99, it’s only $50 less than a normal Xbox One S.

I’ve never engineered a console before. But it seems like a system that can’t use physical media at all, should be cheaper (even with the free games). One of the cool things about the Xbox One S was its ability to support 4K content, digital or otherwise. That’s not the case anymore; you’ll only be able to stream 4K content through third party apps like Netflix going forward.

Regardless of how much the console costs, it’s still an interesting development. Being the first of its kind, it’ll be cool to see how well it does come May. Will this start us down the “all digital” path? We’ll have to wait and see…

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition will be available worldwide on May 7th. Fans can pre-order it from select retailers today.
