Orcs Must Die! 2 Fire & Water DLC; Is It Worth It?

Every game seems to be getting DLC nowadays. Ranging from new single player content to multiplayer maps, there is always something extra to download. Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die! 2 is no different; they recently released a booster pack with a decent amount of content for fans. While this is great and all, I’m sure you’re wondering if the DLC is worth your time and money. Good question. Read on to find out!

The booster pack, called Fire and Water, adds in new levels, traps, enemies and more. First let’s start with the cool new enemies. If you’ve play Orcs Must Die! 2, then you know about the Earth Elementals; giant rock creatures that are able to soak up a lot of damage before dying. Not only can they be tough to kill, but they also split into two smaller elementals upon death. They’ll split once more before finally going down for good, making groups of them a challenge to defend against. Well, this new pack adds two new elementals (Fire and Water) to the mix. Each one brings their own interesting twist to the table.

The Fire Elemental is similar to the Earth one; it can take up a lot of damage and upon death it splits into smaller versions of itself. The smallest version of this creature resembles floating fireballs. Instead of racing to the Rift like the other enemies, these Firelings will chase you in hopes of getting close enough to use its explosion attack. If you get caught in the explosion, you’ll take major damage and before being set on fire. Once set on fire, your movements will be slowed making it easier for other fireballs to get close to you. A couple of these guys can really ruin your day.

The Water Elementals are a little different in design. Instead of starting out as giants, they’ll spawn as small water creatures. What makes then dangerous is how they are able to grow into larger enemies over time. When you kill a Water Elemental, it will leave behind a puddle of water. If another Water Elemental sees this, they’ll race over and absorb it, transforming them into a larger threat. If they do this a second time, they’ll turn into a giant Water Elemental (Water Lords). The other elementals, even though they grow in number, get weaker as you go. That’s not the case here; these guys get more dangerous as you go along. It’s much harder to keep a Water Lord from crossing a Rift then it is a smaller enemy!

To battle these challenging new enemies, you’re going to need new traps. The Fire and Water Booster Pack adds 3: the Web Spinner, Ceiling Darts, and Floor Portals. The Web Spinner is great as it covers enemies in web, slowing their movement for a certain amount of time. The Ceiling Darts are great for peppering an area, hitting multiple enemies at once. Using a bunch on low level ceilings can make quick work out of most creatures. The Floor Portal is great for enemies that break through you’re defenses. It’ll transport any enemy that steps on it back to their starting position, forcing them to walk back through all your traps. The only downside is that it takes a while to recharge and it costs a lot to place. Just like the old traps, all three can be upgraded using skulls. Even without being upgraded these traps are very helpful when it comes to defending the Rifts.

All and all, the booster pack is well worth the extra money to download. I love a good (fair) challenge and the new enemies bring that in spades. The new traps are powerful; they come in handy regardless of the level. Speaking of which, the pack comes with three new, well designed levels and three new Endless Mode conversions. On top of that is a new “Trapless” Skull Award, granted to those who can complete a level without using traps. That’s a lot of great content for only $4.99. What more could you ask for? A better question –What are you waiting for? Go get the Fire and Water Booster Pack now!

Orcs Must Die! 2 is a really fun game. I wish it required me to use more varied traps to be successful though.
