Sony Launches Fortnite Cross-Play Beta

It would seem that Sony has finally caved to the pressure. As of today, the company is working towards offering cross-play functionality for Fortnite between its PlayStation 4 and other consoles. Yes, that includes the Xbox One…

John Kodera, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced that they’ve identified a path toward this feature. “We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution,” said Kodera. “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”

They’re still toting this notion that the lack of cross-play was due to the possibly of a poor playing experience. Sony went from a pro-consumer standpoint – accusing Microsoft and Nintendo of exposing children to external influences and some such – to saying that they believed the best place to play was on the PS4. Meaning, they’re going to hold your account hostage in protest; even if they disapproved of cross-play, there was no reason to lock Fortnite accounts to PSN, forcing gamers to make a new one (on a different platform) if they wanted their purchases and such to carry over to a different console.

Thankfully, Sony has come around. Not only did Kodera say that they’re working to get Fortnite cross-play up to speed, but also hinted at the possibility of other titles (assumedly Minecraft and Rocket League) receiving the same treatment. This forward thinking move would be beneficial for all gamers, not just those who’ve purchased a PS4!
