Sony Unveils The PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim!

Sony revealed their new family of PS4’s during their PlayStation Meeting yesterday. While it wasn’t as exciting as their previous E3 showing, it did get gamers talking about what’s to come…namely more consoles!

Let’s get this out of the way up front; the PS4 Neo has an official name. Called the PlayStation 4 Pro, this enhanced console will offer improved image processing capabilities. We’re talking 4K quality images and support for HDR technology, enabling better brights and darks with a wider range of colors. Of course, this will require gamers to purchase a 4K TV if they haven’t done so already.

Even if you don’t have a 4K set, the PS4 Pro can still make your games look and run better. Thanks to a faster CPU, the system will offer up 1080p resolution and higher frame rates for some supported titles. The system will also feature a 1TB hard drive, additional USB port (to connect the upcoming PlayStation VR system) and the ability to support 4K video playback via services like Netflix and YouTube.

Beyond showing what the system could do visually – which in retrospect seemed fruitless given how most weren’t watching on a 4K monitor/TV – Sony announced the price and release date for the Pro. Gamers will be able to purchase this powerful console starting November at the suggested retail price of $399. Not bad, not bad at all. My only concern was the fact that the Pro won’t support 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. That is disheartening, especially when you consider that the Xbox One S is cheaper (with a smaller hard drive) yet still offers 4K streaming and Blu-ray options.

Speaking of the Xbox One S, the PS4 Slim was also officially revealed. Its base price is the same as the S at $299 but it doesn’t include any of the 4K awesomeness. The good news though is that regardless of what console you get, you’ll be able to play every PS4 title. No splitting the community or requiring gamers to upgrade to play the latest God of Uncharted or VR shooter.

The PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro will be released on September 15th and November 10th respectively. Plenty of time to decide if trading in your old PS4 for the new hotness is the right move; I’m personally waiting to see what the Scorpio brings to the table. In the meantime though, be sure to check back here as we continue to cover all things gaming!
