Capcom Reveals Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite!

Well, it would seem that the rumors were true – Capcom did reveal a new Marvel vs. Capcom title during this year’s PlayStation Experience. Called Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, this game looks to feature new faces and old gameplay elements…

Before we get into the new and old, one thing to note is that Infinite doesn’t have a 4 in its name, which by Capcom standards means that it isn’t necessarily the fourth instalment (though it’s certainly not another Super something something version of MvC 3). Another thing to note is Marvel’s more hands on approach this time around. Check it:

“For the last two decades, Marvel vs. Capcom has been one of the most celebrated franchises among fans,” said Mike Jones, Executive Producer, Marvel Entertainment. “To deliver on that legacy, we’ve worked closely with Capcom to create a game that honors the heritage of the series and combines Marvel’s unique brand of storytelling with Capcom’s world-class gameplay. We’re raising the bar with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and are excited for players to get their hands on it next year.”

The part of Mike’s quote I like the most is the “unique brand of storytelling”. Infinite will have a single player story mode, complete with cinematic cutscenes akin to what was seen in recent fighters like MKX. Basically, we’ll have a more concert reason for these two universes to collide. What’s really cool though is the possible inclusion of the Marvel cinematic universe. Like the presence of the coveted Infinity Gems.

Capcom went on to announce an Arcade, Training, Mission (not sure what that is) and online/offline multiplayer modes. They also revealed that the fighting will be strictly a 2 on 2 affair (there won’t even be assists). The idea is to be more inviting to new players while adding emphasis on the teaming of characters. Being more causal friendly might frighten some hardcore players, but fans of the series know that 2v2 fights were the norm – going from X-men vs. Street Fighter to the first MvC title.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is scheduled for a 2017 release on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. I’m personally looking forward to seeing what Capcom has in store. So far, it at least sounds interesting!
